In just under 5 years, Millennials are expected to make up about 75% of the global workforce. Millennials are the first generation to cause major upheaval in the workplace due to their technological skills, high levels of education, and increasing dissatisfaction with traditional ways of working.

However, in recent years, older members of Generation Z, roughly the generation born around 2000, have also entered the workforce. Due to the financial crisis, Millennials were primarily concerned about job security at the beginning of their careers, while striving for a work-life balance along the way. In 2021, as Generation Z enters the workforce in the post-pandemic world, work-life balance is one of the things they not only strive for, but demand.

What do these two generations have in common, and what is even more important to Gen Z in the workplace?

Smart and secure technologies

Millennials grew up tech-savvy, but most of them can still remember what life was actually like before the Internet. Generation Z, on the other hand, is the first generation that can’t imagine a world without technology, the Internet and smartphones.

To attract these young workers, employers need to invest in smart technology and cloud solutions that increase productivity and allow them to store and share information in the most secure way possible. After all, a wide range of industries deal with sensitive data on a daily basis. GDPR-compliant applications and document workflow tools with the highest encryption standards are a must.

Connection and flexibility

Millennials had long sought that flexibility in the workplace that is now standard in many places due to the pandemic. Generation Z workers are more certain than their predecessors that a 9-to-5 workday is not necessary to get the job done. Rather, they want to balance their workday with their individual passions and entrepreneurial pursuits.

As a generation that has grown up with smartphones and a variety of other electronic devices, they also demand flexibility when it comes to work devices. They don’t want to do everything on a single device. Instead, they want to work from anywhere, at any time, using whatever device works best for them; A new challenge for employers to embrace tech tools that work on many platforms.

Careers with purpose

Generation Z strives for fulfillment in their lives and looks for companies that have a positive impact on the world. Generation Z also appreciates when companies are committed to their personal and professional development. Millennials, on the other hand, value a good salary and flat hierarchies.

Both Millennials and Generation Z reject pointless, repetitive tasks that can easily be replaced by technology, such as documentation. They privately rely on Alexa, Siri and Google to manage a variety of tasks in their daily lives through voice. By using voice technology at work, they can easily reduce the time they spend on low-impact tasks, which in return allows them to find more meaning in their work.
