A clinical note can capture the consultation accurately and still need work before it fits your documentation process. The headings may differ from those you normally use. Relevant information may need more detail, while other sections add little to the record. Reorganizing those drafts after every consultation takes time.

Custom templates in Philips SpeechLive Health AI Assistant give clinicians greater control over that starting point. You can now choose the sections in your template and guide what the AI Assistant includes or leaves out, helping AI-generated document drafts better reflect your needs.

For healthcare professionals exploring AI-assisted clinical documentation workflows to reduce administrative burden, this adds flexibility where it matters: in the documents you review and use every day.

What’s new in SpeechLive Health AI Assistant?

SpeechLive Health AI Assistant uses speech recognition and a healthcare-trained AI to turn natural clinician-patient conversations into structured clinical documentation for professional review. Predefined templates already provide a ready-made starting point for common documentation formats, such as SOAP or progress notes.

The new custom templates feature lets you shape that structure around your own workflow. You can build reusable templates with relevant sections, create custom sections and define instructions that guide the generated content.

This extends the product’s existing documentation capabilities. Alongside choosing from over 50 predefined formats, clinicians can now create their own and influence both the organization of a draft as well as the guidance used to produce it. Better documentation means improved patient care, more organized patient encounters and better patient outcomes.

Why custom clinical documentation templates matter

Documentation requirements vary between practices and consultation types. Even clinicians using the same broad format may prefer different headings or levels of detail.

A draft structured around how you document care can reduce the time spent needing to move information between sections, helping you focus on reviewing the content.

Custom clinical documentation templates support that through:

  • Greater control: Choose relevant sections and guide what information each should contain.
  • A consistent structure: Reuse your preferred format across consultations.
  • Less manual restructuring: Reduce the need to reorganize AI-generated notes around the same requirements each time.

The benefit is especially relevant for recurring documentation. A template you shape once becomes a reusable starting point, helping you bring your preferred structure into subsequent drafts.

How custom templates work

The Template Builder brings template creation into the SpeechLive Health web experience. You can build the structure and adjust the instructions behind individual sections.

Choose the sections you need

Start by opening the Template Builder and naming your template. Then drag and drop relevant sections from the Sections Library into your document structure.

You can also create custom sections for documentation needs that the existing choices do not cover. This gives you flexibility to organize a template around the information relevant to your workflow.

Guide the AI Assistant with section prompts

Custom templates go beyond choosing headings. You can configure individual sections with Include and Exclude prompts, defining what the Health AI Assistant should include or leave out.

These instructions help steer the generated content toward your preferred level of detail and the purpose of each section. For example, a section intended for a concise overview can have different guidance from one intended to capture a more detailed account.

The prompts guide the structured document draft. Clinicians still review whether the resulting documentation accurately reflects the consultation and contains the necessary information.

Save and reuse your template

Once you have built the structure and customized the guidance, save your template for future use. You can also add a greeting and signature where appropriate, and edit, duplicate or delete your custom templates, as well as marking your regularly used custom templates as a ‘preferred template’ to make it easier to find.

In the initial release, you can create, edit, manage and use custom templates on the web. On mobile, you can select and use templates you have already created on the web.

What this could look like in practice

Consider clinicians spending time documenting follow-up consultations. Their preferred note separates the patient’s reported progress from the agreed next steps, with a concise overview at the beginning.

Using a custom template, they can choose relevant sections and create an additional section if needed. They can then set instructions for the information each section should contain.

After the consultation, the AI Assistant generates a draft using that template. The clinician checks the content against what was discussed, corrects inaccuracies and confirms that the next steps are recorded appropriately.

The same structure can then be reused for another relevant consultation. Each draft still requires individual review, but the clinician has a starting point shaped around their recurring documentation needs.

Flexibility within the existing SpeechLive workflow

Custom templates keep this additional control within the SpeechLive Health AI Assistant experience. Clinicians can adapt their documentation structure while continuing to work within the existing SpeechLive environment.

Professional oversight remains central. A consistent template helps organize information, while the clinician remains responsible for reviewing and approving the generated draft before final use.

The update also sits within SpeechLive’s established approach to data protection. SpeechLive is hosted on Microsoft Azure, and customer data is not used to train AI models. Healthcare organizations can consult the SpeechLive Trust Center for information on security, privacy and compliance.
