A new approach for the
engineering industry

Digital voice technology from Philips plays a crucial role in improving employee productivity

“It is crucial for our business to deliver increasingly complex and large-scale engineering projects, while ensuring a consistently high standard of work every time.” Says Kate Beauchamp, Head of Legal at Mabey Holdings, a leading engineering firm with 38 locations around the globe.

“I have overseen many technological changes within the office environment over the years, all with the aim of helping the business improve its efficiency and effectiveness. With this always in the forefront of my mind, I realised the urgent need to update our dictation methods. Previously we’d been using old analogue machines which required employees to carry out as many dictations as possible on one tape then pass them on to a secretary to transcribe.”

Finding a new product

“The old analogue system we were using was flawed in many ways; mainly due to the slow turnaround of transcriptions, the high costs of tapes and their potential to go missing. As our workload increased these problems became unmanageable and we knew that we needed to find a suitable replacement for the old system. Whilst looking for a new system which would be simple and flexible, my new secretary Melanie Payne mentioned that she had previously worked with Philips machines in the past.”

Melanie explains, “We used dictation systems from Philips at my previous company and they were amazing. They do not require cassettes and so there were never any problems with running out of tapes. Also the sound clarity is so clear that there were never any issues regarding transcription.”

Efficiency and accuracy are vitally important in the engineering sector. This is why SpeechLive is perfect to quickly yet flawlessly convert speech to text."

Benefits of digital dictation and remote transcription

Kate continues, “After Melanie’s recommendation we decided to do a trial with Philips SpeechLive along with Pocket Memo voice recorders. We knew straight away that these were the products for us. The main draw for us was that the products use a standalone system – so we would be saving on buying expensive tapes and the cost of implementing a bespoke IT system. In addition, it means that I and others are now able to work from home, and due to the cloud facility, are able to send dictations straight to the office to be transcribed.”

The outcome for the company

“Since adopting Philips dictation technology, we have noticed a significant increase in employee productivity thanks to the speed that SpeechLive and the Pocket Memo allow. It has resulted in a higher output of work without compromising on quality. Finally, the sound quality of the new systems mean there are fewer errors in the transcriptions. This is of paramount importance to us as the engineering field leaves so little room for error.”
