One device, two ways to work

Healthcare professionals and other documentation-intensive users are increasingly looking for solutions that support both traditional dictation workflows and conversational documentation. To help bridge these needs, selected Philips SpeechMike Premium devices now include a new Conversation Mode, enabling users to seamlessly switch between dictation and conversation capture without changing devices.

Available from 10 June 2026, this new feature extends the capabilities of compatible SpeechMike Premium models, making them even more versatile for modern speech-driven workflows.

What is Conversation Mode?

Conversation Mode automatically adapts the microphone behavior based on how the SpeechMike Premium is being used.

When the device is placed on a desk, it switches into Conversation Mode, optimized for capturing conversations. When the device is picked up again, it automatically returns to Dictation Mode for traditional speech recording and speech recognition workflows.

This intelligent switching happens automatically, allowing users to move naturally between different documentation scenarios.

Benefits for everyday users

  • Support multiple recording scenarios: whether you are creating traditional dictations or capturing conversations during consultations, meetings, or interviews, a single SpeechMike Premium device can support both workflows.
  • Smooth transition to Ambient Voice Technology: as organizations increasingly adopt Ambient Voice Technology (AVT), users can begin integrating conversational documentation into their daily routine without changing the way they work.
  • Familiar user experience: because the same SpeechMike device is used for both dictation and conversation capture, there is little need for additional training or workflow changes.
  • Greater flexibility: users can easily switch between recording scenarios without manually reconfiguring microphone settings.
  • Protect existing investments: organizations that already use compatible SpeechMike Premium devices can take advantage of new capabilities without replacing their existing hardware.

How to enable or configure Conversation Mode

Conversation Mode is enabled by default on supported devices.

Users can manage the setting in several ways:

  • Directly on the device by pressing F2 + F4 simultaneously for five seconds
  • Through Philips SpeechControl Software 4.9
  • Through Philips Remote Device Management Software (PRDM)

When using the device shortcut, pressing and holding F2 + F4 for five seconds cycles through the available position control settings. The device LED indicates the active mode:

  • Amber LED: Conversation Mode enabled
  • Red LED: microphone mute mode enabled
  • Green LED: position control disabled

Firmware update required

To use Conversation Mode, compatible devices must be updated to the latest supported firmware version.

Required firmware versions:

  • SpeechMike Premium / Premium Touch: Version 3.87
  • SpeechMike Premium Air: Version 4.74

Firmware updates can be performed using Philips SpeechControl Software or Philips Remote Device Management Software (PRDM).

Which devices support Conversation Mode?

Conversation Mode is available on selected SpeechMike Premium devices manufactured after June 2021:

Availability depends on the device serial number and manufacturing date. Users should verify compatibility with their Philips sales partner or system administrator.
